What is Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program?

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools is a 6 week (June 20-July 29, 2011) summer educational and cultural enrichment program for children 5 to 18 years of age.

The CDF Freedom Schools model can also be implemented year-round as an afterschool program. The CDF Freedom Schools program:

•Provides enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem and generates more positive attitudes toward learning.

•Focuses heavily on reading literacy by engaging children’s minds through stimulating books, discussion, and cultural outings.

•Develops youth leadership by instilling an appreciation for learning, conflict resolution skills, and a commitment to community service.

•Offers weekly parent workshops and volunteer opportunities.

•Ensures every child has access to health and mental health resources.
